God’s Design for Christian Dating

I tried to find in the Bible where they talk about dating.  I keep finding where men and women were betrothed to one another, but dating…not so much.  So that put me on a mission to find out what it meant to be betrothed to someone.

Betrothed has two definitions. The first is where one has been contracted to be married to another and the other definition is where marriage is the intent of the relationship.  This whole idea of dating someone just for the sake of dating someone is completely something that was created by us.

Exodus 22:16
And if a man entice a maid that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely endow her to be his wife.

God never intended for us to sleep around with each other.  Obviously, we are no longer betrothed to each other.  However, God’s design for Christian dating is for us to remain abstinent during the time that we are dating.  God fully intended intercourse to be for those that are married.

1 Corinthians 7:2-4

²Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.

³Let the husband render unto the wife due benevolence: and likewise also the wife unto the husband.

⁴The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife.

This is very powerful in the sense that it tells us to avoid fornication.  As Christians we know the many scriptures that consider fornication a sin.  This scripture is talking about intercourse between husband and wife only.  If you are not married, then for you to have intercourse is a sin before God.

Dating is something that we all do; however as Christians that are dating it is important to remember the word of God and to know that in order to be obedient we must not fornicate.  There is absolutely no way to get around it.
